Turn instructions

A Turn instruction (TI) is the set of text, images and spoken words that can be indicated at Junction arrows.

Selecting a junction arrow will call up the accompanying panel. More general information can be found on the Junction Arrows page.

This page further elaborates on the Turn instructions panel which can be accessed by clicking on Instructions. When there is a pencil behind Instructions, instructions have already been defined for this Junction Arrow. When there are no directions (yet), a "+" is displayed.

The Turn instructions panel contains the following components:

• Visual instructions
• Towards
• Exit signs
• Voice prompts
• TTS

Visual instructions

Visual instructions can consist of a Road shield and/or free text.
Visual instructions can be maintained from L3 onwards.

If no instructions have been added to the turn before, proceed as follows:

• Remove the existing field.
• Click on the + and select Road shield.
  • See further on the Road shield page.
  • Do not enter text in the shield. The text is entered in the Free text.

• Click on + and add Free text.
  • Add maximum three place names (but also indications such as "andere richtingen", "doorgaand verkeer"), which are on the signs in white-on-blue, in one block of free text.
  • Text in white / brown blocks is only used if the sign contains no other text and you absolutely want to fill in the signage, otherwise do not fill in anything so that the standard road name is indicated.
  • Note the ' / ' as a separation between place names.
  • If there are no direction signs, the street name (without road number) is filled in.
    

Notes'

• In the app two full lines are available, what doesn't fit is not displayed.
• If you fill in both the Visual Instruction and the Direction, each will be displayed on its own line. If a line doesn't fit in the app, it will be truncated.
• If the Direction field is left blank, the Visual Instructions can use two lines if necessary.
• Direction is not displayed in the app route overview.
• Where applicable, use the 1200 sign for the official names.
• We do not use images, with exception of , in the Visual instructions.
• If a sign shows a place name with a road number in brackets behind it - for example Amsterdam (A4) - do not add this road number to the visual instructions. If the road number is mentioned without brackets, do indicate the road number.
• For the time being, we keep the long names on the exits and do not replace them with instructions.
• The Navigation instructions make the use of Wayfinder constructions completely redundant.

Towards

• The default rule is to fill the Towards field with the Place Names.
• Leave the Towards field blank for highways and exits.

Exit signs

• For numbered exits, add an exit sign with the correct exit number, otherwise do not add an exit sign.

Voice prompt

Add a direction if needed or leave "Waze Selected".

TTS

Fill in the TTS field as follows:

• If applicable: "Road number" or "Exit"
• ri (omit at exit)
• All place names (if applicable), separated by a " / ".

Comments and tips

• If the sign shows a place name with a road number in brackets - for example Amsterdam (A4) - do not add this road number to the spoken instructions.
• Making TTS equal to text in Wegschild block is useful, but the best approach can differ per situation.
• If a turn is already indicated on a previous sign, base your directions on that previous sign. Otherwise, use the signs at the intersection.
• Click on the microphone to check how the instruction is pronounced.

Ring roads

When a "RING" is mentioned on the signs, also include "RING" in the Visual instruction and the TTS. See also examples below.

When RING is followed by a wind direction, such as RING-South, use a vertical line (pipe) between the highway name and the place names to distinguish that it is not "ri" RING-South but the A10 RING-South "ri"....
Visual instruction:

• "RING" plus Road shield plus Place names.
  
• Road shield plus RING-<wind direction> | Place names

TTS:

• <road number> plus "RING" followed by "ri" plus Place names
• <road number> plus "RING" <wind direction> "ri" plus Place names

Examples

Here are some practical examples:

Example of a standard road sign with two road shields.

• Visual indication: road shield N302 N305 text: Harderwijk Zeewolde
• Direction: Do not use
• Exit signs: Do not use
• Instruction: If necessary
• TTS: N302/N305 towards Harderwijk / Zeewolde

If an exit is already indicated on an earlier sign, base the instructions on this earlier sign. If not, use the signs at the intersection.

• Visual instruction: road shield N295 text: Horst / Venray / Nijmegen / A73
• Direction: do not use
• Prompt: If necessary
• TTS: N295 ri Horst / Venray / Nijmegen

Example of an exit sign with two S-road shields.

• Visual cue: road shield S104 S105 text: Amsterdam-De Baarsjes
• Direction: Do not use
• Exit signs: Exit sign + number (5)
• Instruction: If needed
• TTS: Exit 5 Amsterdam-De Baarsjes

An example with a signpost where a road number (N300) is mentioned without a road shield.

Visual instruction: Parkstad Ring

• Direction: Nuth / Heerlen / A76
• Exit signs: Do not use
• Instructions: If necessary
